Newday 2013... What did I learn?

Last month, I was at Newday, a Christian youth event held for about a week every year. It’s a young Christians dream - amazing worship with thousands of others, seminars packed with information, non-stop entertainment, plus you have your friends with you. It was a great week. I got a lot out of the whole Newday experience and God revealed some pretty interesting things to me. So this blog really is just me sharing with you the things that God showed me at Newday and what I really learnt during this whole experience and even some stuff I realised after the whole thing was over.

1.     Am I loved?

So Andrew Wilson did a great talk at Newday and I managed to get some really good notes, as well as go into some deep thought. What I came to realise is that all humans need to know the answer to the question “am I loved?” We all have a burning desire to be loved and to feel needed. God has purposely created us in a way in which we all have this deep God void inside of us that can only be filled by… God. Until then, we will try and try to fill this void with temporary things. Only God can fill that emptiness deep inside of us and let us know we’re loved. We’re wired in a way that we need to know someone loves us and cares for us and sometimes – well, a lot of the time, human love isn’t quite good enough. You see, human love is conditional. Even with your family or with your closest friends, you’ll find that if you mess up or hurt that person, they suddenly don’t love you as much and they won’t always forgive you. You’ll find that even the most loving human relationships, as wonderful as they are, won’t fill that void deep inside of you. But God? Well God loves you unconditionally. That means that His love for you isn’t based on what you do right and do wrong but on His goodness and His faithfulness. We don’t “gain” salvation. Salvation is a free gift to anybody who is willing to accept it. That is the beauty of Christ. We do not have to earn our way into heaven or earn God’s love or approval. But we can be sure that we are accepted and loved by God! God loves you for who you are now, who you were before and who you are to become. He doesn’t love you “only if you change.” He loves you just the way you are yet He loves you too much to leave you that way. God’s love isn’t like any human love. Only God can fill that void inside of you permanently and answer that question – Am I loved? Only God.
Another thing that really made me think from Andrew Wilson’s talk was the concept of Christ on the cross. Now think about it – when you are in pain (and I’m not just talking a little bit of pain), like REALLY in pain, what are you thinking about? You’re not thinking about much else except this pain that is being inflicted upon you and you just want it to stop (I do anyway). Of course you won’t be thinking about someone else. Now imagine if you are in excruciating pain and someone had purposefully caused you to be in this pain. Would you be thinking “God forgive that person” or “arghhhhhhhhhhhh I hate this person!” I know if it was me I certainly would not be thinking about forgiving that person in that moment. I would most likely just be thinking of myself and the pain that I am in. Because when you are in such agony or pain, you do not think about other people but only what you are feeling because it overtakes every part of your being. I remember being very young and getting my thumb shut in a door. The pain was excruciating and all I could do was scream and ignore everyone who was trying to calm me down. But the love of God is such that even when He was dying (and this isn’t just a thumb in a door – this is a zillion times worse), He is looking out for others. As people mourned for Jesus when He was dying on the cross, He said to them “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me.” (Luke 23:28) As He died, He prayed for the very people who had caused Him such agony, saying “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:24) John 19:26 says “When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.” EVEN as Jesus was dying in such an excruciating way, He was looking out for people and praying for the forgiveness of those who had caused Him such a death. This is God’s everlasting love.
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)
“He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time” (2 Timothy 1:9)
“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:10)
So the answer to the question – am I loved? YES!!! YOU are loved by God beyond what you could ever fathom. Your brain does not even have the capacity to fathom God’s love for you. Then, the real question must be – will you love Him back? Not by just saying you do but by the way you live… by turning away from sin? Do you really live in a way that shouts “I love God!”?

2.     Who do you worship?

Another thing I've come to learn and really witness in society is that people are designed to worship. We are wired to worship something/someone. Whether that’s yourself, your spouse, money, drugs, celebrities… We all want to worship something and express praise and adoration. We all know that one person who is completely obsessed with a celebrity and it’s all you ever hear them talk about.  Sometimes we don’t know even know we’re worshipping something but we have allowed it to rule the throne of our hearts. I personally love Jimmy Needham’s song – Clear The Stage (if you've never heard it – YouTube it!). It describes exactly how we can put other things before God. Here are some of the lyrics:

Anything I put, before my God, is an idol
Anything I want, with all my heart, is an idol
Anything I can’t, stop thinking of, is an idol
Anything that I, give all my love, is an idol

So when I first heard that song, boy was I convicted! I thought, if that’s the case then I've put a lot of things before God! Anything that consumes your thoughts, that you desire the most and that you give most of your time to is something you worship. Now the problem with worshipping people or worldly things is, well, they suck really. As humans we are all fallible, we’re not perfect, therefore we are not worthy of worship. But God who is perfect, who is holy, who never lets down, who is without sin, who is righteous… HE is worthy of praise, HE is worthy of our worship, HE is worthy of our attention. God needs us not because HE needs us but because WE need to be needed. A lot of the time people crave attention. Sometimes people want to be loved and adored so much that this desire drives them in search of fame. But we aren't worthy of such glory. We were made in His image so that we could reflect God’s glory. But people have turned their “mirror” to glorify themselves.
You cannot serve two masters. Jesus refuses to share the throne of your heart. It’s time to take off whatever it is you have put on your pedestal and replace it with CHRIST. There can be things that have our heart, for example seeing your friends or family get saved, that aren't bad things in themselves but they have our hearts and so become obstacles in our faith. We need to learn to let go and let God. Trust Him and let Him have your heart. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) Don’t give Him just a bit of your heart; give Him your WHOLE heart. If you don’t know how, prayer is a good place to start.

3.     What are the chances?

At one of the evening meetings at Newday, Adrian Holloway preached on “why do we exist?” If you were there, you’ll probably remember it as the ‘physics meeting’ as there was a lot of talk about the universe and such.
So based from that preach, I'm going to talk about what the chances of us being here actually are. Because a lot of people will say that the Big Bang happened and it was all chance. What I'm going to talk about is how likely it really is that the universe was created by chance.
Physics is kind of a love-hate subject for me. I did well with it in school; I finished with an A in fact. But there are just some parts of physics that absolutely bore you to death, and other parts that will just fascinate you beyond belief. Regardless, I'm going to attempt to write about it – so bare with me!
So is everything really down to chance? Well I've discovered that if it was only down to chance, the universe was unthinkably unlikely to produce stars, let alone life. If we were just 5% closer to the sun, we would fry, if were just 5% away, we would freeze to death. There would be no life on earth. This is called fine tuning and it absolutely amazes me how we are in exactly the right spot for life to exist. If we were only slightly further or slightly closer, then none of us would exist.
As we are all aware, the universe is expanding. But the speed of expansion is critical. If the universe expands too fast, nothing would exist and there would be an empty universe, but if the universe expands too slowly, the universe just falls back on itself. If the rate of expansion, one second after the beginning moment, had been smaller by even one part in a hundred thousand million million, the universe would've re-collapsed. That means, that there is only one chance in one hundred thousand billion billion billion billion, that our universe could exist. Yet... here we are! A few facts from Andrew Wilson’s book “If God Then What?” absolutely blew my mind away, so let me state them to you:

·         If the ratio between the strong nuclear constant and the electromagnetic constant was different by one part in ten million billion, there wouldn't be any stars.
·         If the balance between the electromagnetic constant and the gravity constant was altered by one part in 1040 (that’s 10 with 40 noughts after it), the types of stars that would form would be incapable of sustaining planets with life. That’s roughly equivalent to covering America and a billion other continents the same size, with piles of coins stretching to the moon, hiding one red coin in one of the piles and a blindfolded friend picking it out by chance.
(All of this information is in Andrew Wilson’s book - If God Then What? Page 52.)
As you can see, the chances of the universe being here by mere chance are just too unthinkably low.

I'm going to use the example Adrian Holloway used in his talk.
A pastor attended a big football match. Seems pretty ordinary at the moment right? Now what if every time the pastor stood up at this football match, his team scored a goal? Well the first time you’d think it was a coincidence, the second time it happened, again you’d think it was a coincidence. But after the 3rd, 4th, 5th time, you’d think ‘hang on a minute…’ Just because the pastor stood up, wouldn't mean the opposition goal keeper would let the ball into the net, just because the pastor stood up, it wouldn't mean the ball was anywhere near the goal, it wouldn't mean someone’s taking a shot. And what if the pastor stood up exactly on the minute, every minute, for the entire game and the final score was 90 goals to 0? If that happened, you would suspect the match was fixed. Why? Because it’s so unlikely. According to Sir Roger Penrose (who developed our current understanding of black holes), the chance of our universe existing, is one in ten followed by more zeros than the total number of particles, in the entire universe! You would NEVER accept a chance universe on that basis. You would definitely suspect universe fixing, true?

Yet it shocks me how many people still believe in chance universe. Can’t you see how incredibly unlikely it is? Doesn't it make more sense that it is a fix? That maybe, just maybe, there is actually an intelligent mind behind this? As many scientists say, ‘the universe looks as if it knew we were coming.’
I’ll leave it at that. (You can listen to Adrian Holloway's preach on the Newday website!)

4.     Forgiveness

God revealed a lot to me on the topic of forgiveness at Newday. Below are some of the things I came to realise at Newday, after Newday and some of the stuff I knew before.

Forgiveness is one of those things. I find it’s either you love it or you loathe it. There are some people who are really good at forgiving others and easily forget about things. However, there are others, who find it really hard to forgive other people and are quick to hold grudges but not as quick to let go. I was one of those people. I was never quick to apologise and if someone did apologise to me it would take me a while to really forgive them and even if I did I would not behave in a way as though I had forgiven them. Now sometimes, people can be really hurtful towards us and we think: Why on earth should I forgive you? From a worldly point of view, that’s understandable but from a Godly point of view, not so much. Because, what if God said that about us? Uh oh. We’d be in trouble.
Now I've had my share of hurt. For example, I've received some pretty nasty insults, mostly since after I've been saved and mostly because of my faith. Now my first reaction is, well I feel hurt. But then I think: who am I to not forgive this person? This might seem like a strange thing to think because a lot of other people will think about taking revenge or holding a grudge and I was one of those people. I thought the exact same thing before I was saved and even at the beginning of the whole journey. But now Jesus has changed everything. I've come to realise that the worst possible thing that has been done to me is the smallest thing in comparison to what we have done to Him. It was because of us that He was nailed to a cross; it was because of our sin. And a lot of the time we throw that right back into God’s face by the way we live. Yet God still loves us and forgives us each and every time. His grace is still unending. Therefore, I think, who am I to not forgive others? Every single time we sin and run away from God, He is waiting for us with open arms, ready to forgive and forget what you have done. Jesus was tortured and nailed to a cross because of our wrong doing, yet we won’t forgive someone simply because they said a few nasty words? Imagine if God were to think like us, every time we sinned against Him and hurt Him, He was to hold a grudge… Well I can tell you none of us would be making it to heaven. So, THANK GOD He is nothing like us! THANK GOD that He is God and we are not. Thank God.
One of my favourite scriptures in the Bible is the Parable of the Prodigal Son. It demonstrates God's love, forgiveness and mercy for us beautifully. In this parable, the father shares his wealth amongst his two sons. One of his sons went off and lived wildly, spending his money on prostitutes and living recklessly. When all the money had gone and he was left with nothing, he went back to his father, not expecting to be forgiven so prepared to work for him as his servant. But the Bible says, “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him…the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” (Luke 15:20 & 15:22). This describes perfectly God’s mercy for us. We may have done the worst possible thing and ran away from God and lived a life completely against Him but if we come back to Him, He not only takes us back but He throws His arms around us and kisses us! He rejoices! We shouldn't be one to hold grudges when our God is such a merciful God.
"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.” (Matthew 18:21-22)
“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” (Matthew 6:14-15)
Even as Jesus was dying and He’d had to suffer the most excruciating pain He prayed for those very people saying “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” Even then. So how can we not do the same?
One of the lessons I have learned is sometimes people have a hard time forgiving others because they haven’t learned how to forgive themselves. But if you are going to enjoy life you are going to have to heal and forgive. In the Bible, forgiveness is not a suggestion, it is a command. So search your heart and forgive. I realise a lot of us may not have a problem with forgiveness. Unforgiveness is a symptom. Pain and pride is usually the root. If you find that forgiving others is something you find difficult to do, maybe it’s wise to search for the root of this problem. Whether it’s pride or simply being hurt in the past, God can heal and restore all things and change your heart. Turn to Him.

5.     How to overcome a Jericho?

Now before I start, let me tell you about the story of Joshua and the Walls of Jericho for those of you who aren't familiar with it.
So, after the death of Moses, God chose Joshua, son of Nun, to be the leader of the Israelite people. They set about to conquer the land of Canaan, under the Lord's guidance.
Joshua sent spies into Jericho and they sneaked into the walled city and stayed at the house of Rahab, a prostitute. But Rahab had faith in God.  She hid the spies from the king's soldiers, and when the time was right, she helped the spies escape out a window. Rahab made the spies swear an oath that if she promised not give their plans away, they in return they must spare Rahab and her family when the battle of Jericho began – they agreed. Meanwhile, the Israelite people continued to move into Canaan. God had a strange plan for the battle of Jericho. He told Joshua to march around the city once a day for six days with his army. Seven priests were to walk ahead of the Ark, each carrying a ram’s horn. On the seventh day they were to march around the town seven times, with the priests blowing the horns. When they hear the priests give one long blast on the rams’ horns, all the people would shout as loud as they can. Then the walls of the town would collapse, and the people could charge straight into the town. On the seventh day, the assembly marched around the walls of Jericho seven times. Joshua told them that every living thing in the city must be destroyed, except Rahab and her family. All items of silver, gold, bronze and iron were to go into the Lord's treasury. At Joshua's command, the men gave a great shout, and Jericho's walls fell down flat. The Israelite army rushed in and conquered the city. Only Rahab and her family were spared as was promised.
All of this can be found in the book of Joshua in the Old Testament if you didn't quite grasp my summary - you can have a read yourself!

So what I mean in asking how to overcome a Jericho is, how to overcome those difficulties or “walls” in our lives.
We all have struggles and we all have things we need to overcome, like Joshua did. A lot of the time, it’s not easy and we struggle to cope. So, here are my five top tips from what I gathered from the preaches at Newday and also what I've experienced myself:

1. Acknowledge God
Firstly, it’s important in every circumstance in your life to acknowledge God. By acknowledging God, it means you have chosen to believe that He is there, through whatever situation you’re going through and that He is there to help. “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

2. Stick to God
It’s really important to stay on Gods team and stay faithful to Him. Remember that God’s team is always the winning team – there is always victory in Him! So even when you’re going through a rough time, know that it won’t last forever and ultimately you have the victory in the end through God, just as Joshua and the Israelites did! In the story of Joshua and the Walls of Jericho, Rahab the prostitute made the right choice – she went with God, instead of the evil people of Jericho. Joshua spared Rahab and her family in the battle of Jericho and in the New Testament, we learn that God favoured her by making Rahab one of the ancestors of Jesus Christ - the Savior of the World.

3. Obey God
Joshua's strict obedience to God is a key lesson from this story. At every turn Joshua did exactly as he was told by God and the Israelites prospered under his leadership and had the ultimate victory. An ongoing theme in the Old Testament is that when the Jews obeyed God, they did well. When they disobeyed, the consequences were bad. The same is true for us today. In Isaiah 1:19 it says, “If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.” And in Romans 8:28 it says, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” God says that to love Him is to keep His commandments (John 14:15). It’s hard to sometimes be obedient to God in difficulties as it may mean you will have to deal with a situation in a different way than you would otherwise and it may mean coming out of your comfort zone, as it did for Rahab when she let the spies into her house. But in the end, obeying God, worked out for the good, as it will for everyone who does. Jesus says: “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.” Obeying God may also mean having great courage, which leads me on to the next thing…

4. Don’t be afraid
It’s easy to panic in different situations and hardships we face. Joshua felt unqualified for the monumental task of taking over for Moses, but God promised to be with him every step of the way - "Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9), just as he had been for Moses. This same God is with us today, protecting and guiding us. “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

5. Trust God
And finally… Trust God! Sometimes we are in situations where we have no idea what God is doing and sometimes God calls us to do things that seem very strange to us. But it is so important to trust in God anyway! No matter how strange or weird it may seem, if God’s telling you to do it – do it! It all leads to victory in the end, as we see with Joshua.  As Moses' apprentice, Joshua learned firsthand that he wouldn't always understand God's ways (especially when asked to walk around a wall seven times!). Human nature sometimes made Joshua want to question God's plans, but instead he chose to obey and trust God and watch what happened. By doing this, God gave Him victory. Joshua is an excellent example of humility before God.

If you do all of these things, in the end, you WILL have victory! Those walls WILL fall down! God promises that! Just trust in Him! Read His word and talk to Him! Storms don’t last forever but whilst they are there they build strength and endurance. In Psalm 23:4 it says “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” See that it says He walks us 'through' the valley... not over it or around it. He gives us strength until we reach the other side. Death is an enemy to God, and He has destroyed its sting through His blood and resurrection - and we are His work, and are on display for all creation.

“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18)

6.      Important dates

So during one of Andrew Wilson’s seminars at Newday, he mentioned some dates that I think are pretty important to know. I found it very interesting, you may too. I've listed these dates below.
Probable dates:
AD 33 – Jesus is crucified
AD 60 – Mark writes his gospel
AD 61 – Luke writes his gospel

AD 62 – ‘Acts’ written by Luke
AD c62 – Paul’s death in Rome

(Paul’s letters are earlier than all four gospels).

So I'm going to bring my blog to an end now. There’s lots of things I didn't mention like the woman’s conference that I went to at Newday that impacted me and changed me so much. But I’d like to include that in a future blog I will be writing on purity, so stay tuned! ;)

I’d like to finish off by saying; sometimes we spend more time seeking that next spiritual rush than we do God. Remember, you don’t have to be at Newday to meet with God, God is with you right now. It’s up to you to spend time with Him daily. Spiritual highs don’t last, but the refining and heart changing that is resulted through spending time God, will last you a lifetime.

Starting out...

Hey there! So this is my first ever blog post! I've had a blog for a while but I've only now decided to actually start blogging. I'm not quite sure as to what the actual content of my blogs shall be, but it will mainly be me just sharing my life - as it comes. As I am starting college in September, be sure to expect some of my blogs to be about my college experiences. Jesus is also a pretty big part of my life to say the least, so you'll be hearing a lot about Him too! All in all, I have had my share of experiences and I'm sure many are to come. But what I'm really hoping is that having this blog will allow me to learn a lot of new things and grow more as a person and just have some fun really! So, stay tuned. :)
