Looking back briefly on 2013, it's easy to find myself thinking that it was just another year. Which is why I have had to sit down and really think about what it has taught me. 2013 was the year I graduated school, started college etc etc. I attended different events and built on new friendships. But what I've really had to think about is how this year has helped shape my character.
One thing I've realised this year is that I don't need to fit into a particular social group. I can be different and that is OK. There's been times where I've been called names just because I don't want to go out drinking or do so and so thing that others do. And I've realised that's OK too. I'm not saying it's alright for people to call you horrible names - but for me, I realised I don't really care. I couldn't care less about a worldly view of me. Not when I know the truth.
I've also realised that there are many ups and downs, lows and highs. Especially as I grow older and hold more responsibilities. I know that sometimes I can feel doubtful or worthless or unloved but I've learnt what to do in those times: to not give up when the going gets tough. I will look to His word instead of letting guilt or shame or doubt draw me away from it, from Him. Because His word tells me the truth: that I am loved, that He cares about every detail of me, and that I don't have to let temporary emotions and feelings drag me down or drown me because He will lift me up and keep my head above the water. I've gone through some rough patches this year, I've had to let go of things and of people and I've had to endure some things and will continue doing so. But I'm glad. I'm really glad. Because it's in those times that I've realised who my friends are. Who is willing to lift me up in times where all I can manage is a grim smile. I'm glad because those times have allowed me to realise that endurance builds faith and faith builds strength... The strength to continue, to be joyful always.
As I look back on this year I realise I've accomplished a lot. I have some good memories:
Sitting in the school canteen with friends (eating either jacket potato or curry--seems trivial I know), finally finishing school, going to prom, to Newday in the summer, getting my results back and being so pleased, starting college, settling in and making new friends, seeing some of my close friends get baptised. All amazing.
I've also realised that some of the things that have counted the most are the little things. Whether it's small messages people have sent me telling me how much I mean to them or just the day to day things like seeing my friends -- it all adds up.
All in all, I'm excited for what 2014 will bring. What I am hoping for is just a year full of new and amazing experiences and building more friendships and just learning new things.
I want to thank God for getting me through everything. Literally. There is nothing I have overcome without Him and when I see how far He has brought me and how much He has opened my eyes it always leaves me in sheer awe. I'm so glad His love is unending and unconditional - if it wasn't I'd have no hope.
